The artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is a plant from the composite family (Asteraceae) and comes from the Mediterranean region.
The name comes from medieval Arabic: الخرشوف (al-ḫaršūf). The plant is already in the 8th century BC. mentioned by Homer and Hesiod.
Pliny the Elder reports that the plant grows in Carthage and Córdoba. Several varieties also grew in Sicily, introduced there in early antiquity by the Greeks.
They called this plant κάκτος,”káktos”. In the late 15th and 16th century, the plant appears in southern France.
The Dutch introduced the artichoke to England, where they grew in 1530 in the gardens (Newhall) of Henry VIII of England.
