The artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is a plant from the composite family (Asteraceae) and comes from the Mediterranean region.
This plant is cultivated in Italy and other countries for food and secondly for medicinal use.
The plant called Cynara was already known to the Greeks and Romans, but it was certainly a wild plant.
Apparently, it was attributed with aphrodisiac powers.

In the fifteenth century, the artichoke was already consumed in Italy. Originally from Sicily, it appeared in Tuscany around 1466.
According to tradition, it was introduced to France by Caterina de’ Medici, who was fond of artichoke hearts.
It was she who brought it from Italy to France when she married King Henry II of France. Louis XIV was also a great consumer of artichokes.
The Dutch introduced artichokes to England: we have information that they were grown in Newhall in the garden of Henry VIII in 1530.

Therapeutic applications
