General information about Ceramics

Ceramic (from Ancient Greek kéramos, meaning ‘clay‘, ‘potter’s earth‘) is an inorganic, non-metallic material, very ductile in its natural state and stiff after the firing phase. The baking phase takes place at 980-990°C in special ovens.

Ceramics usually consist of different materials: clay, feldspar (Sodium, Potassium or both), quartz sand, iron oxides, aluminum oxide and quartz.

Various objects can be produced with ceramics, such as tableware, decorative objects, building materials (bricks, tiles and wall tiles), coverings for walls and floors in homes.

The study of production techniques (molds, surface treatment, firing), their forms and those of decorative motifs, which can be printed, engraved, printed, applied or painted on artefacts, has been called *Ceramology.

*Ceramology is the science that studies the production of ceramics and decorative vases, linked to the disciplines of archaeology, ethnography, history and geography.

In addition, it includes from the most sophisticated containers to simple objects such as bricks or tiles, and then other possible architectural decorative elements.

Finally, it also takes into account the work of vases (processing, surface treatment, firing, shaping), their shapes and functionality (typology) and decoration techniques.
